Intel Xeon X5365 V8 Performance Review

By Vince Freeman :  October 2, 2007

Test Setup

The Xeon X5365 V8 is at the absolute top end of the performance scale, and offers 8-core processing. There are no similar desktop processors, so we're looking at some of the fastest dual and quad core offerings from both AMD and Intel. The Intel side is comprised of the Core 2 Extreme QX6800 & QX6700 and Core 2 Quad Q6600 quad core models, along with the dual core Core 2 Extreme X6800 and Core 2 Duo E6700. The AMD contingent includes the Athlon 64 X2 6000+, and Athlon 64 X2 5600+ AM2 processors.

Naturally, these high-end processors are matched with corresponding platforms and peripherals, while ensuring consistency with the overall reference system mix. The dual Xeon X5365 processors use the Intel S5000XVN workstation board, while the Intel processors use a quad core-compatible Intel D975XBX2. The Athlon 64 X2 6000+, and 5600+ processors run on an nForce 590 SLI motherboard, The base memory capacity is set at 4-GB of DDR2-667 FB-DIMMS for the Xeon X5365 V8 dual-CPU platform, while the Intel 975XBX2 and AMD nForce 590 SLI single-CPU platforms use 2-GB of DDR2-800 at 4-4-4-12 timings.

The default hard disk configuration is comprised of dual Maxtor MaxLine III 250GB NCQ-enabled SATA drives set for RAID 0, which provides top-end disk performance and ensures consistent benchmarking. The video component is high-end mainstream, and consists of a PNY GeForce 7950 GT 512MB PCI Express card. The Xeon X5365 V8 platform does not support Windows XP of any flavor, so we needed to move to Windows Vista Business. Our system benchmarks on the Intel Core 2 and Athlon 64 X2 on Windows XP were consistent, but we have retested all game benchmarks on Windows Vista for the AMD and Intel platforms.

The benchmark list includes a wide range of system, CPU, memory, and gaming tests. These include PCMark05, SiSoft SANDRA XI, WinRAR, and CINEBENCH 9.5, along with TMPGEnc Xpress 3.0 for MPEG-1 and 2 encoding. We also utilize popular 3D game tests like 3DMark06, F.E.A.R. and Company of Heroes. Our default game benchmark setting is 1024x768x32, which is demanding enough for CPU comparisons but still realistic as an actual game play resolution.

* Please note that unless otherwise stated, such as the media encoding times, all performance graph results equate to the standard "higher is better" routine.
