Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9770 Preview
    By Vince Freeman :  November 19, 2007

    Everest Ultimate Edition 4.2 Performance

In order to give yet another view of memory performance, bandwidth and latency, we have incorporated the newest Everest Ultimate Edition 4.2 into our benchmark mix. With many platforms upgrading the CPU bus clock and DDR2/DDR3 memory speeds, the question of memory performance has never been more important. The Everest benchmarking suite offers several different memory performance modules, and has quickly become a standard for many hardware evaluations.

For this review, we use very latest Everest Ultimate Edition version 4.2, which is essential for valid Core 2 Duo/Extreme/Quad and Athlon 64 X2 platform testing. Our benchmark testing centers on the Memory Read, Memory Write and Memory Latency tests, which should give us an overall view of the various platforms, and exactly how the 45nm, 3.2 GHz Core 2 Extreme QX9770 stacks up.

The Memory Read test is our first Everest benchmark, and again, we see the impact of the 1600 MHz bus. The Core 2 Extreme QX9770 powers by its Intel counterparts, and is the first Intel processor to hit over 8K in this benchmark. The two AMD processors remain ahead, but their lead has certainly been carved away by the Intel Yorkfield.

The Memory Write test shows the Core 2 Extreme QX9770 making a real run at the Athlon 64 X2 processors, but falling just short. Even so, it's an amazing turnaround, especially as the Core 2 Extreme QX9770 manages to outpace the Athlon 64 X2 5600+.

The Core 2 Extreme QX9770 and its FSB1600 offer a slight improvement in the memory latency rating, dropping it below 65ns, but still well off the AMD, integrated memory controller scores.
