Intel has freshened its Centrino mobile platform with faster 802.11g instead of 802.11b wireless networking, and Sony Electronics has taken the opportunity to freshen its Vaio notebook lineup with the new Intel Pro/Wireless 2200BG chip. The three new PCs also include what Sony calls the smallest DVD-burning laptop on the market -- the 3.1-pound Vaio PCG-TRA3P3 (about $3,000), which combines a 1.0GHz Ultra-Low-Voltage Pentium M processor with 1GB of DDR memory, 40GB hard and 4.7GB DVD-RW drives, and a 10.6-inch display with the company's XBrite technology. The TRA3P3 comes with Sony's Click To DVD software for one-click conversion of digital camcorder footage to professional-looking DVDs.

The Vaio V505EX (about $1,900) features a 12.1-inch screen with ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 graphics, as well as a 1.5GHz Pentium M processor and built-in DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive. The 4.4-pound slimline comes with a 60GB hard disk and 512MB of memory expandable to 2GB. Finally, the Vaio Z1WA (about $2,300) offers a 14.1-inch display and full-sized keyboard in a slimline package that weighs 4.7 pounds. The 1.7GHz Pentium M-powered portable has a DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive and 60GB hard disk and includes Bluetooth as well as 802.11g wireless connectivity.
