Not many customers complained that the IBM ThinkPad X31 was too big and heavy -- the notebook weighs all of 3.6 pounds and is 1.2 inches thick. But the new ThinkPad X40 ultraportable is 20 percent smaller and 25 percent lighter than the X31 model, yet boasts a full-sized keyboard, 12.1-inch screen, and the choice of either a snap-on base for built-in (total system weight 4 pounds) or powered USB 2.0 connector for external optical drives.

The 2.7-pound, 1.1-inch-thin X40 also features Rescue and Recovery with Rapid Restore, an embedded, pre-boot emergency system for one-button relief from problems such as virus attacks or corrupted system files or drivers. IBM's Active Protection System, similar to automotive airbag deployment technology, instantly parks the hard disk's read/write head in case of a fall. Big Blue rates the notebook's standard lithium-ion battery at up to 3.5 hours, with an optional 8-cell battery offering up to 7.5 hours. Shipping at the end of February, the ThinkPad X40 starts at $1,499 with Intel's 1.0GHz Ultra-Low-Voltage Pentium M, 256MB of memory, a 20GB hard disk, Gigabit Ethernet and 802.11b wireless networking, and Windows XP Professional. A 1.2GHz model with 40GB hard disk is $1,749; options range from a $300 DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive to 802.11b/g, 802.11a/b/g, and Bluetooth wireless.
