Let's talk acronyms: The new Targus external DVD burner supports eight -- CD, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW. But thanks to a ninth -- USB 2.0 -- it doesn't need a tenth -- AC. The Rewriteable DVD±RW Slim External Drive ($490) gets its power from the computer's USB port, with no need for an additional power adapter. It also works without software drivers and is hot-pluggable, allowing connection and disconnection without rebooting.

Under a pound and less than an inch thick, the portable multimedia and backup device comes with Nero 6.0 software for organizing, editing, playing, viewing, and storing data onto a variety of 700MB and 4.7GB optical media. The 4X DVD writer works with Windows Me, 2000, and XP and its USB cable has a pass-through connector for other devices.
